Who is Moore Lighting and Visuals?

Moore Lighting and Visuals is a Texas based company owned by Michael Moore, that specializes in concert tour solutions, live stage lighting, low-voltage LED, visual and laser production.

The Project

Michael Moore was brought in to design the lighting for Boogie’s in Dallas. Boogie’s is one of Dallas’ first all-house music discotheques. featuring a retro-modern aesthetic. The goal for Michael was to envelop the entire venue in seamlessly mapped, beat-reactive pixels. Culminating in a massive, custom-built centerpiece over the dance floor.

The centerpiece was designed to be the focal point of Boogie’s. Specified to be 10 feet in diameter and weighing 110 lbs (50kgs) featuring a 20-inch recessed disco ball at its core and surrounded by 609 individually mapped, addressable RGB LED bulbs.

To manage the immense data requirements and ensure flawless playback the team relied on two Advatek PixLite® E16-S Mk3 controllers.

A challenge for Michael was that they were going to have to install the system with major active construction ongoing at the venue. Pre-planned cable paths could be blocked, and routes would have to travel through closed walls and tight spaces.

The Solution

The system which would be installed into Boogie’s was planned to include two controllers. One would be dedicated to driving all the 24V WS2811 high-density RGB tape across the venue, handling 16 individual home runs and transmitting data anywhere from 10 feet up to 40 feet from the controller to first pixel. Another controller would be dedicated entirely to the 10-foot custom chandelier with 12 individual home runs and the AUX port sending DMX to 2 LED pinspots for the disco ball.

To overcome the challenges of active construction Michael had to manually fish cables through walls totally blind all to figure out possible routing paths, leading to many long nights.

Advatek’s Role

Since Michael’s installation plan required 16 runs of pixel strips, the E16-S was a perfect fit. Additionally, the functionality of using the AUX port to output a universe of DMX512 drew Michael to the controller. These features combined with the support provided by Advatek Assistant 3 made choosing PixLite® Mk3 the obvious choice. Michael Moore, Owner of Moore Lighting and Visuals had this to say:

The Advatek Assistant software proved to be an invaluable technological asset, far surpassing the reliability and functionality of any standard web GUI I’ve previously used. Instead of juggling multiple lighting programs to test pixels on an active construction site, this single standalone tool allowed me to confidently verify the entire system from start to finish

Results

Michael Moore’s work resulted in transforming Boogie’s into a landmark. The installation ended up employing around 40,000 DMX channels across 30 universes of data controlling around 15,000 individual pixels. Michael Moore created a show stopping centrepiece and lighting installation, which guests and patrons will enjoy for years to come.
