Who is Loksu?
Loksu is a South Korea based lighting and system designer who has spent years working with the medium of light to create immersive pieces. Focusing on creating systems in platforms like Touchdesigner and Max to control and operate lighting, lasers and other physical elements; all to create amazing installations.
The Project
Loksu and their fellow artist Nsyme wanted to design and create an installation for the Paradise Art Lab Festival, Jangchung. A 10-day event featuring art and works by selected artists. Loksu and Nsyme wanted to subvert the use of conventional painting-hanging storage racks, like those found in galleries.
To do this they decided to replace each canvas with light, turning that into the main focus. Loksu and Nsyme motorized each rack transforming it into a kinetic sculpture, allowing them to shift left and right independently.
To control the lighting element of the sculpture Loksu decided on using two PixLite® T8-S Mk3 controllers and ten PixLite® R4D-s receivers.

The Solution
With the design and equipment settled on Loksu and Nsyme set to work. The sculpture, Labyrinth, consists of 1.5 x 1. 5 meter frames filled with a 28 x 28 array of LEDs in a grid pattern layered to create a volumetric display. Unlike normal volumetric displays Labyrinth is not fixed. Meaning the frames move laterally and generate animations in real time. This motion allows the installation to capture and project slices of a 3D computer space in real time, as if the structure were scanning through virtual objects and reconstructing them in the air.

To mount the controllers Loksu took advantage of Advatek's data sheets. Using the specifications to custom 3D print brackets that align with the mounting points of the R4D-S. This meant Loksu and Nsyme could attach the receivers upside down and directly to the aluminium profiles that hold the frames themselves.

Loksu has this to say:
The flexibility and ease-of-use of Advatek PixLite® software and Advatek Assistant interface has helped make my design and build workflow become much simpler and stress free. Being able to quickly manage and change all of the outputs of the controller allows me to easily adapt the hardware to various projects. The hardware has been very reliable, and I never have to worry about it causing down-time for any installations or performances.Loksu – Artist at Loksu
Advatek's Role
Thanks to Advatek products Loksu and Nsyme were able to create a show stopping installation. The R4D-S's 4 outputs allowed Loksu to ability to split his LED configuration on each frame into four sections without the need for additional power injection or wiring. This in turn allowed for simplified troubleshooting
This simplified wiring and troubleshooting was further complimented by the T8-S Mk3's dual ethernet ports. Loksu used these to daisy-chain the transmitters and receivers together further reducing clutter in the installation.
And with dithering and gamma correction as standard on Mk3 products Loksu was able to ensure smoother gradients in the animations and even-looking colors.
The final result being an awe-inspiring installation which provided a new take on volumetric sculpture.
