LED Pixel Protocol UCS5603

Overview

This pixel protocol was designed by Lianxinke in China. UCS5603 is very similar to UCS8903 but is built on an 12-bit color data design. Its output pins can support voltages up to 30V, and there is also a redundant data line, to allow for continuous operation even if a single pixel fails. The control circuit comes in a SOP8 package, allowing for more flexibility with LED choice.

Current Control

UCS5603 has the ability to digitally control the current of the connected LEDs. Use the 4-bit current control per color to lower the brightness without sacrificing resolution, and tune the current of individual colors, allowing for more accurate color mixing. This individual current control can be set when configuring your PixLite Mk3 controller.

Considerations for Use

Advantages

  • Up to 30V, allowing for very long cable lengths
  • High PWM rate allows for filming these pixels with cameras up to 34fps
  • Redundant data line reduces chance of entire strip failure
  • 12 bits of data for each color makes dimming curves more smooth

Disadvantages

  • Data-only restricts refresh rates to be limited by the speed of the protocol, which can be slow
